Burnside Bibs by Sew House Seven | Sew Along Tutorial from Sewing Therapy

Hello and thanks for being here. I’m Sara, here to sew along with you, this time the Burnside Bibs by Sew House Seven. Before this pattern, I had never considered wearing or making overalls, but this pattern completely changed my mind. The Burnside Bibs are not your traditional overalls as hold style and comfort in perfect tension, producing a final look that is feminine and modern. By now you may know my style and could have guessed that I made Version #2 that is easier to wear and sew as it has no zipper. I appreciate Sew House Seven patterns as they come with very clear instructions, keeping confusion at bay. My favorite feature from this pattern is the straps that become the ties, which can be tied in many creative ways.

I highly suggest you watch the video especially if you are a beginner or have things that you don’t quite understand with the written instruction

Fuse the interfacing to
the wrong sides of Back Waist Facing

1 Front Pocket Assembly
Serge the outer edge of Pocket and Pocket Facing
Sew the Pocket and Pocket Facing at the inner edge with 3/8″ SA RST (Right Side Together)

*Clipping helps the curves and corners look nice and flat when turned right side out
Clip the curves
Press the Pocket Facing towards the seam
*Understitching is stitching that is sewn as close to the seam line as possible holding the seam tot he facing or lining
Understitch the seam to the Pocket Facing

Folding using the main stitch and press
Topstitch
*The basting stitch will help create a nice curve
Baste the curves of outer edge
*Stitch Length 3.5 – 4
Sew as close to the edge as you can and leave the thread tails
Pull the thread tails and make the curve curl
Fold the rest of outer edge 3/8″ and press

2 Front Pocket to Front Pant
Pin the Pocket to the right side of Front Pant matching notches

Baste the top and the side
Edgestitch/topstitch the outer edge of Pocket

3 Front Assembly
Sew Front Pants together at the crotch RST
Fold 5/8″ of unnotched edge of the Waistband WST (Wrong Side Together)

*My modification: I shortened the bib by 3.5″
Pin and sew the Bib, Pants Front and the Waistband at the waist

Press the Bib and the Waistband towards the seam
Topstitch/edgestitch the Waistband to the Bib

4 Inseam & Rise

7 Shoulder Straps & Ties
Sew the narrow end of the Shoulder Strap and the Tie end
Open the seam
Fold the tie end by 1/2″ and press
Fold and press the Strap and Tie in half

Unfold the Strap and Tie and fold outer edges in 3/8″ and press

Fold in half again and topstitch/edgestitch the entire Strap and Tie

8 Attaching The Bib & Back Waist Facings
Pin and baste Shoulder Strap on the Bib at the notches RST
Slip the Facing over the Overalls RST

Pin along the outer edge and sew with 3/8″ SA
Trim the seam and clip the curved edges
Turn the Overalls right side out
Cover the waist seam with Facings slightly and pin
Stitch in the ditch/Edgestitch

Edgestitch/topstitch the entire Bib top

Topstitch along the top edge
*Somehow my topstitch didn’t match on the Back so I stitched one more line

9 Attaching The Belt Loops
Make the Belt Loops using your preferred method
Topstitch down both sides

Cut the Belt Loops into 2 3/4″ pieces
Fold the ends of Belt Loop and press
Pin the Belt Loops spacing them regularly and sew at the top and bottom

*I added stitching to the center of each belt loop to create two channels for the ties, as suggested by the instructions, and I prefer this tidier look.

10 Hem The Pants
Serge the hem, fold, and edgestitch/topstitch
Or doublefold the hem and edgestitch/topstitch

Alright! That’s it for today! Thanks for reading and I will see you in the next post!
