McCall’s M8087 | Sew Along Tutorial from Sewing Therapy

Hello, I’m Sara and welcome back to Sewing Therapy. Today I’m sewing a McCall’s M8087 and invite you to sewalong with me.

The M8087 is a dress pattern but I want to introduce this pattern to you as a top pattern. It’s a versatile top with two looks: a ruffle top or an off-shoulder ruffle top. McCall’s rates this as an easy pattern and it is indeed simple to make, and you’ll be happy to hear that I made the process even simpler. Only one to one and a half yards of fabric is needed, depending on your length preference.

There are several ways to make this top uniquely yours such as changing the length of the ruffle, adjusting the hem from a classic hem finish to a cropped elastic waist. Every change I’ve tried makes the top look so different – the possibilities for modifying this top are endless!

Let’s get started.

Fabric Recommendations

Cut
1 Front Bodice (On Fold), 1 Back Bodice (On Fold), 2 Neck Ruffle (On Fold), Bias Binding for armholes, Elastic for neckline

Seam Allowance
Use 5/8″ seam allowance unless otherwise stated

01. Ruffle
Pin and sew two Neck Ruffles at sides RST (Right Side Together)

Serge

02. Bodice
Pin and sew Front and Back Bodice at sides RST
Serge
Press the seam towards the Back Bodice
Pin and sew Bias Binding to the armhole of Bodice RST

Clip the seam
*Clipping helps to make a nice and smooth curved line
Understitch
*Understitch is to sew as close to the seam line as possible holding the seam to the facing or lining

Doublefold the Bias Binding, hiding it inside the Bodice
Edgestitch/topstitch

03. Bodice + Centers
Mark the centers
Slip the Bodice into Neck Ruffle and pin the neckline
Baste 1/8″
Make a casing for the elastic

** If you choose to double fold like I did, make sure not to fold too much otherwise the neckline will lay too low or your arms may feel uncomfortable

Insert the elastic into the casing
Join the elastic
Sew to close the opening

04. Hem
Hem the Neck Ruffle
Option 1: Doublefold and edgestitch
Option 2: Serge, fold and sew
You can finish the bottom hem as desired

I’m so glad I was able to make these tops before the summer ended and they’ll work well in the transition to fall with ruffles up instead of down. This top adds flair and style to any outfit and I hope you enjoyed sewing along with me! What did you think about the M8087? I would love hear your thoughts and questions in the comments section below. Thank you! 안녕!
