Let’s get started!

Material (You will be able to find the links on the material after the tutorial)
– Sweatshirt Pattern, 1 Yard Jersey Knit, 1/2 Yard Ribbing, Multi-Purpose Poly Thread, Stretch Poly Thread (Optional), Stretch Needle

Special Materials for Stretch Fabric Sewing (depends on how stretchy your fabric is)

  1. Cut your fabrics
1 Front Bodice on fold (Main fabric)
1 Back Bodice on fold (Main fabric)
2 Sleeves on fold (Main fabric)
2″ Width Neckband (Ribbing) – You will learn how to measure later
6″ Width Hemband (Ribbing) – You will learn how to measure later
  2. Sew the shoulders
Sew the shoulders RST (Right Side Together)
    Serge the seams
  3. Attach the sleeves
Line the middle point of the sleeves with the shoulder seams (RST)
TIP: Shoulder seams lay towards back bodice
    Pin and sew
    Repeat with the other sleeve
    Serge the seams
  4. Sew the side seams
Front bodice and back bodice right sides together
    Sew the side seams
    Serge the seams
  5. Add the hem band
TIP: The length of the band is 85% of the length of your hem
Measure the waist (24″ on fold)
    24″ x 0.85 = 20″ + 0.5″ (Seam Allowance) on fold
    Cut 20.5″ on fold
Fold the band in half right sides together
    And sew the short edge
Fold the band in half lengthwise wrong sides together
Mark the sides and the centers of front and back on the raw edges of the bodice and the band
Slide the band over the bottom of the bodice RST
Match all the marks and pin them
The band will be smaller than the bottom edge
Sew the band onto the sweatshirt, stretching it to fit
    Serge the seam
  6. Add the neckband
    Measure your neckline
TIP: I use a string to measure curves
    It’s 19″
TIP: The length of the band is 85% of the length of your neckline
    19″ x 0.85″ = 16″ + 1″ (Seam Allowance) on fold = 17″
Fold the band in half right sides together and sew
Fold the band in half lengthwise wrong sides together
Match all the marks and pin them
The band will be smaller than the neck edge
Sew the band onto the sweatshirt, stretching it to fit
    Serge the seam
  7. Hem the sleeves
    Serge the sleeve hem
Fold 2 inches and sew the hem
TIP: I use washi tape to sew a straight stitch
    Repeat for the other sleeve
  8. Optional Final Touch
Iron-On Patch is optional! My hubby loves having one!
